Teaching is in French, but every formation is walked through even if you don’t speak French - and many in the group will be happy to speak English.

View Event PosterThere is a paradox in the way democratic bodies, such as the Ville de Paris, imagine rewilding. As a ‘wild’ aesthetic for urban nature becomes mainstreamed, marginal zones are being opened up and re-formulated as public spaces, managed to promote biodiversity and ‘healthy’ modes of public life. In the process, ‘wild’ forms of life that have found shelter in this marginality, and are framed as unclean and illicit, are policed out of existence – cruising, free parties, and informal shelter.
As part of Commons, Wilds, Infrastructures project, this Paris-based seminar and collective walk led by Dr John Bingham-Hall will think through queer perspectives on public space and ecology.

View Event PosterIn the recent decade, crisis situations, such as violent conflicts, have increased substantially and brought more complexity to the search for solutions in addressing existing emergencies. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has witnessed a sequence of enormous losses in regional stability and human lives that affect Asian, African, Latin American and Caribbean regions, and most recently, Eastern Europe.
The concept of Knowledge Diplomacy helps us understand the intersections between different stakeholders such as states, universities, multilateral organisations, policymakers and people in a variety of diplomatic processes that make a real impact and difference in the world, specifically in addressing crisis situations. It is a two-way process, which refers to the role that actors such as international higher education, research, and innovation play in building and strengthening international relations and, vice versa, the role that international relations play in facilitating and improving the work of these actors.
The event is an opportunity for an interdisciplinary panel of experts from academia and diplomacy to discuss the implications for the creation, exchange and sharing of knowledge crisis situations, specifically in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

View Event PosterThis talk in the series turns to representation, and the category of aesthetic realism. Is there still (if ever there was) a role for realism, as a way of modelling and politically mediating action and its conditions? It will consider some of the shared problems that literary realism and economics have in imagining the real conditions of individual and social action – particularly, in including crisis within the constitution of reality, or in imagining the totality without positing equilibrium as its condition.

View Event PosterWe are pleased to welcome Prof Melissa Aronczyk's presentation on her latest publication with Maria I. Espinoza A Strategic Nature: Public Relations and the Politics of American Environmentalism.
In A Strategic Nature(Opens in new window), Melissa Aronczyk and Maria I. Espinoza examine public relations as a social and political force that shapes both our understanding of the environmental crises we now face and our responses to them. Drawing on in-depth interviews, ethnography, and archival research, Aronczyk and Espinoza document the evolution of PR techniques to control public perception of the environment since the beginning of the twentieth century. More than spin or misinformation, PR affects how institutions and individuals conceptualise environmental problems — from conservation to coal mining to carbon credits. Revealing the linkages of professional strategists, information politics, and environmental standards, A Strategic Nature shows how public relations restricts alternative paths to a sustainable climate future.
Please note that the book presentation will be delivered in English and followed by a discussion with the audience (in English and French).

View Event PosterThe Covid-19 pandemic has reignited arguments about the use of learning tools and methodologies, which have an impact on how both distance and campus-based learning is conducted. It has also reignited discussions about the impact of various forms of teaching and diverse uses of learning tools on student experiences. This webinar will look at what these transitions mean for practitioners, how institutions are implementing these changes, and what we can learn from these trends in order to better understand how this will affect practitioners' professional lives in the future.
