What's On - the Diary of events of our Member Associations

While all the copies of the Origin of Species (1859) were sold in England within a single day, it proved to be much more difficult for Charles Darwin to get published in France. This lecture will seek to explain why France under the Second Empire seems to have been so reluctant to embrace Darwin’s disruptive theory, often inaccurately referred to as the "theory of the ape".

Our guest speaker, Michel PRUM, is Professor Emeritus at L’Université de Paris Cité. He has coordinated the French translation of the complete works of Charles Darwin, and published numerous articles on Darwinism, socialism and liberalism in nineteenth-century Britain. He is the founder of the Groupe de Recherche sur l’Eugénisme et le Racisme (GRER) and has edited the Racisme & Eugénisme series at L’Harmattan. He currently edits the new "Minorités" series at Orbis Tertius.
